Why Prompt-Testing Is the New Rank-Tracking
71% of B2B buyers start with a search, and a growing share of those searches now ends inside an AI answer instead of a results page. The buyer asks ChatGPT for a shortlist, gets 4 vendor names, and never sees position 5. That is the zero-click reality: if your brand is not in the answer, you are not in the deal, and no analytics tool shows you the loss.
Rank trackers cannot see inside these answers. The only way to know where you stand is to ask the engines the same questions your buyers ask, systematically, and score what comes back. That is exactly what this library does. It is the same prompt-testing methodology we run for our own AI marketing clients, packaged so your team can run the first pass without us.
The 6 Prompt Categories, Explained
Buyers do not ask one kind of question. The library covers the 6 question types that appear along a B2B buying journey, with 50 prompts spread across them. One real example from each category:
1. Category Discovery
The earliest question, where the buyer names a problem, not a product.
What should a mid-market SaaS company use to monitor its software supply chain for security risks?
2. Best-Of Shortlists
The prompt type that produces the vendor lists buyers actually act on.
What are the best B2B PPC agencies for enterprise software companies in 2026?
3. Direct Comparison
Two named vendors, head to head. If the engine gets your positioning wrong here, sales feels it.
[Your brand] vs [competitor]: which is better for a security team of 20?
4. Alternatives
The highest-intent category: someone is actively trying to leave a competitor.
What are the best alternatives to [market leader] for mid-market companies?
5. Pricing and Cost
Engines answer pricing questions confidently, and often wrongly. You want to know what they claim you cost.
How much does [your category] software cost for a 200-person company?
6. Problem-First Use Cases
The buyer describes a job to be done and lets the engine choose the toolset.
How do I qualify inbound leads automatically without adding SDR headcount?
How to Score What Comes Back
Each prompt gets scored on 3 dimensions, and the scoring sheet in the PDF does the arithmetic for you:
- Mention. Is your brand named anywhere in the answer? Binary, per prompt, per engine.
- Citation. Is your domain linked as a source? A mention without a citation means the engine learned about you somewhere else, and you do not control that somewhere else.
- Position. Where in the answer are you named? First-mentioned vendors dominate shortlists; a mention in position 6 is a different business outcome than position 1.
Roll the 3 dimensions up across all 50 prompts and you get your share of answer: the percentage of tracked prompts in which your brand appears, weighted by position, tracked over time and against named competitors. It is the AI-answer equivalent of share of voice, and it is the number we walk through in our Share of Answer webinar. Because prompt phrasing and engine behavior both shift, we score monthly and treat any single run as a snapshot, not a verdict.
One warning from running this at scale: do not test only branded prompts. Branded questions flatter you, because the engines resolve your name to your own website. The unbranded category and problem-first prompts are where the losses hide, and they are most of this library. The same discipline applies in classic SEO, where non-brand visibility is the number that grows revenue.
Prompt-Testing, Answered
What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of making a brand visible and correctly represented inside AI-generated answers on engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. It complements SEO: search optimizes for a list of links, AEO optimizes for being named and cited inside the one answer a buyer reads.
What is share of answer?
Share of answer is the percentage of a fixed prompt set in which your brand appears in the AI answer, weighted by position and tracked against competitors. It plays the role share of voice played in advertising: one number that tells you whether buyers who ask AI engines about your category hear your name.
Which AI engines should I test?
Start with ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. They cover the majority of B2B research behavior and they answer differently: Perplexity cites sources aggressively, ChatGPT leans on training data plus browsing, Gemini pulls on Google's index. Differences between the 3 are themselves diagnostic.
How often should I run the prompts?
Monthly is the practical cadence for a manual run. Answers move when models update, when competitors publish, and when your own citable content lands, so a single test tells you where you stand and a monthly series tells you whether it is working. Daily automated tracking exists, and it is what we run for clients.
Do I need special tooling to use the library?
No. The library is designed for a manual first pass: 50 prompts, the 3 free engine interfaces and the included scoring sheet. Tooling becomes worthwhile when you want daily runs, more prompts or competitor alerting, which is the automated version we operate for clients.
