Share of Answer, Defined
Share of Answer is the percentage of AI-generated answers, across a fixed panel of buyer questions in your category, in which your brand is named, weighted by how early in the answer the mention appears and tracked over time against named competitors. It is measured per engine, because the same brand can hold 40% on Perplexity and 8% on ChatGPT for an identical prompt panel, and it separates mentions, being named in the answer, from citations, having your domain linked as a source. A mention without a citation means the engine learned about you somewhere you do not control.
It is the AI-answer successor to share of voice: one number that tells a leadership team whether buyers who ask AI engines about the category hear the brand's name. Rank trackers cannot produce it, because they read results pages and the buyer now reads a single synthesized answer. The only way to compute it is to ask the engines the questions your buyers ask, on a fixed panel, on a fixed cadence, and score what comes back. Our AEO Prompt Library is the manual first pass of exactly that method; this report is the version you take to a board.
Executive Summary: What the Board Edition Argues
The report's argument in 3 sentences. AI engines now sit between B2B buyers and vendor shortlists, and visibility inside their answers is measurable, not anecdotal. A board should track that visibility as one number, Share of Answer, the way it once tracked share of voice, with a baseline, a trend and named competitors. In our method, correcting a weak number is a 1-to-3-month body of citable-content work, not a multi-year rebuild, which is why measurement is the first move and the plan is the second.
The 6 chapters, in order:
- The metric defined. Prompt-set design, model coverage, and why citation and mention are scored separately.
- The 2026 evidence base. The market data behind the urgency, every statistic cited to its source in-line.
- Measurement methodology. How a prompt panel is constructed: journey stages, unbranded majority, fixed wording, per-engine runs. The framework, usable by any team.
- The competitive benchmarking rubric. The scoring sheet a CMO hands to their team, competitor columns included.
- The 90-day correction timeline. What movement to expect at 30, 60 and 90 days, so nobody promises the board the wrong curve.
- The board-slide template. One page, screenshot-ready, every chart stating its finding in its title.
How AI Rewrote B2B Discovery in 2026
82% of B2B technology queries now trigger a Google AI Overview, up from 36% twelve months earlier, the steepest industry climb in the dataset (BrightEdge Generative Parser data, February 2025 to February 2026). The buyer's first screen in your category is now, most of the time, a synthesized answer rather than a list of links.
When an AI Overview is present, organic click-through falls 61%, from 1.76% to 0.61%, and paid click-through falls 68% (Seer Interactive, 2025). Traffic you used to win from rankings you still hold quietly stops arriving, and no dashboard labels the loss.
94% of B2B buyers used AI during their most recent purchase process, up from 89% a year earlier, with 55% using it to compare vendors before any vendor contact (Forrester Buyers' Journey Survey of 18,000 business buyers, 2026). The shortlist is being drafted inside the answer, before your first touchpoint.
Put the three together and the mechanism is plain: the buyer asks an engine, the engine names 3 or 4 vendors, and position 5 does not exist. If your brand is absent from the answers, the cost shows up as pipeline that never formed, which is precisely why it goes unmeasured. Making brands visible inside those answers is the core of our AI marketing work, and Share of Answer is the number that work is accountable to.
What the Board Will Ask, and How to Answer It
The ChatGPT question has moved from conference panels to board agendas. In 2026 it arrives as 5 questions, usually in this order:
- Do we appear when buyers ask AI engines for a shortlist in our category?
- Who does appear, and are they gaining?
- Are we improving, or is this quarter's number just this quarter's number?
- What is invisibility costing us?
- What is the plan, who owns it, and when does it show?
Each question is answered by a number, and each number has a defined source. The rubric:
| Board question | The number that answers it | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Do we appear? | Share of Answer, overall and per engine | A monthly run of a fixed prompt panel |
| Who is winning? | Competitor Share of Answer on the same panel | The same run, competitor brands scored alongside yours |
| Are we improving? | The month-over-month trend line | A baseline older than one month, which is why you start now |
| What does it cost? | Cited category click-through loss applied to your own search demand | Market data plus your Search Console, chapter 2 of the report |
| What is the plan? | A 90-day correction timeline with checkpoints at 30, 60 and 90 days | The methodology and timeline chapters, ready to present |
The Board-Readiness Check
Before the download: for each of the 5 questions, say whether you could put a number behind it in a board meeting this week. Yes scores 2, partly scores 1, no scores 0. The verdict updates as you answer, and nothing you click leaves this page.
1. Do you know whether your brand appears when buyers ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini for a shortlist in your category?
2. Can you name the competitors that dominate your category's AI answers today?
3. Do you have a measured baseline older than one month, so you can show a trend rather than a snapshot?
4. Can you estimate what AI-answer invisibility costs you, using your own search demand?
5. Is there a named owner and a 90-day plan for improving the number?
Answer all 5 questions to see your readiness verdict.
AI Search Visibility, Answered
What is Share of Answer?
Share of Answer is the percentage of a fixed prompt panel in which your brand appears in the AI-generated answer, weighted by position and tracked per engine against named competitors. It is the AI-answer equivalent of share of voice: one number that tells you whether buyers who ask AI engines about your category hear your name.
What is AI search visibility?
AI search visibility is how findable and how correctly represented a brand is inside AI-generated answers, on engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and in Google's AI Overviews. Share of Answer is the way to track it as a single number: measured on a fixed prompt panel, per engine, monthly, against competitors.
How is a prompt panel constructed?
A panel is a fixed set of buyer questions, typically 10 to 50, spread across journey stages from category discovery to alternatives and pricing, with unbranded questions in the majority because branded prompts flatter every brand. The wording stays fixed between runs so the trend measures the market, not your phrasing. Chapter 3 of the report documents the full framework.
How quickly can a weak Share of Answer be corrected?
Our working expectation is 1 to 3 months to first measurable movement, driven by publishing citable content, correcting how sources describe you, and re-running the panel monthly. Engines re-crawl and models refresh on their own cadences, so the report's chapter 5 sets checkpoint expectations at 30, 60 and 90 days rather than promising a date.
Why does the download ask for my company domain?
The domain is what we use to prepare the free Share of Answer snapshot offered with the report: your top 10 category questions, run through our tracking setup, returned as a 1-page competitor view. It is used for nothing else, and the snapshot is optional.

Send us your domain and your top 3 competitors. We run your top 10 category questions through the same daily tracking we operate for clients and send back a 1-page competitor snapshot, no charge and no deck.
